Recoating your hardwoods when they show signs of wear protects the wood.  Once the polyurethane has worn down, the wood underneath is exposed. The stain wears off, leaving bare spots in high traffic areas.  Neglected floors typically have bare spots in the middle of hallways and in front of doors. Once this happens, the floors will need to be sanded and refinished.
